A grieving father brought his mute, seemingly mentally challenged boy to Shankara. Shankara looked at the child and asked, "Who are you?" To everyone's astonishment, the boy spoke fluently, reciting a profound philosophical poem declaring himself the immortal, non-dual Self. Shankara named him Hastamalaka (one who holds truth clearly like an amla fruit in the palm) and initiated him.
