Before his birth, Shankara’s parents, Shivaguru and Aryamba, performed intense penance at the Vadakkunnathan Temple. Lord Shiva appeared in a dream, offering them a choice: a long-lived but ordinary son, or an extraordinarily brilliant, omniscient son who would die young. They chose spiritual brilliance, and Shiva himself manifested as Shankara.
