A radical tantric ascetic named Ugra Bhairava tricked Shankara into offering his body as a human sacrifice to Lord Bhairava. As Shankara sat in deep meditation, the Kapalika raised his weapon to behead him. Sensing the danger from miles away, Padmapada invoked the fierce power of Lord Narasimha, manifested instantly in the cave, and destroyed the Kapalika to protect his master.
