Shankara engaged the elite scholar Mandana Misra in a high-stakes, multi-day debate. The loser agreed to adopt the lifestyle of the winner. Mandana Misra’s brilliant wife, Ubhaya Bharati, served as the neutral referee, placing garlands on both. As Mandana Misra’s arguments weakened, his garland withered, signaling his defeat and his transition into becoming Shankara's disciple, Sureshwaracharya.

The Challenge of Ubhaya Bharati

Though Mandana Misra was defeated, Ubhaya Bharati challenged Shankara, stating that as his wife, she constituted half of his spiritual entity, and Shankara must defeat her too. She intentionally asked him intricate questions regarding Kama Shastra (the science of marital and sensual love), a subject completely foreign to the lifelong celibacy of a Sanyasi. Shankara requested a month's pause to find the answers.

Parakaya Pravesha: Entering the King's Body

To understand human emotional relationships without breaking his monastic vows, Shankara used his yogic powers of Parakaya Pravesha (transmigrating into another body). He left his physical body guarded by his disciples in a cave and transferred his consciousness into the freshly deceased body of King Amaruka, experiencing palace life firsthand before returning to win the debate.
