While writing his monumental commentaries (Bhashyas) on the Brahmasutras, the Upanishads, and the Bhagavad Gita, an old Brahmin challenged Shankara to a theological debate. The debate lasted for days without resolution. Recognizing the supreme intellect of his opponent, Shankara realized the old man was Sage Vyasa himself. Vyasa blessed his commentaries and extended Shankara's life from 16 to 32 years to spread the philosophy.
